Jean McLaughlin
Hi, I'm Jean. I have been with the Family Centre since July '96. I
started as a part time administrator and became a part time Coordinator in May '99.
I first became interested in deafness about 13 years ago when I stopped someone in the
street to ask for directions and they were Deaf. I then worked in two pubs that Deaf
people regularly enjoyed and I wanted to communicate with them in their own language. I have
CACDP Level 1 and have completed CACDP Level 2 but the exam pass was not to be!!
I have worked in the voluntary sector on and off for 30 years (I know I just don't look
old enough!) working with the blind, elderly and victims of crime. My work
background has mainly been in admin and accounts.
At the Family Centre I am responsible for our team of volunteers, fundraising, courses and general day to day running of the office.
Monica Cherryson
As some of you may or may not know, I am based in Elmfield School and much of our work concerns the children who attend that school. I have different methods of working depending on the needs of the family and of the child. Families are often referred to me via the Head teacher of Elmfield School, although it is not uncommon for families to come forward asking for my support also. I will usually follow up the referral with a series of home visits. During home visits, I provide communication support, advice upon a number of different issues and I am also a good listener. During the initial visit with a family, I set a six-week plan, based on their specific needs. I also observe and work with the children at school and during home sessions. This gives a more balanced view hopefully resulting in a more positive outcome.
