Activities & BSL Overview

Family Activities

Activities at The Family Centre are for parents, children and your extended family.  We welcome deaf and hearing members of your family to all our events.  Families from across the region come together for recreational and educational activities, trips and visits.

Our families have one thing in common, they are all living with deafness.  Their experiences in a wide range of family circumstances mean that you will be amongst people that understand the issues in your family.

Come along and make new friends.  Your children will soon join in, have fun and build their confidence and communication.  If it's your first time we can organise a buddy to meet you and help you settle in.

All our activities are suitable for deaf family members whether they sign or not - so everybody can get involved.

Activities include:

•  Three parties each year - Summer, Halloween and Christmas.
•  A children's activity at our AGM in November.
•  Regular trips out e.g. Avon Valley Wildlife Park, Windmill Hill City Farm, Pirate Party.
•  Activities - puppet making, Bradley Stoke fun session, mosaic workshop.

Kids Club

The Kids Club is open to deaf children aged 6-10.  We run sessions monthly during term time.  Last year we had a pottery making session, circus skills and indoor climbing.  There are only 12 places available per session and they are suitable for all deaf children - whether they sign or not.

Youth Club

See our separate page for information on our youth club.  This is for deaf young people aged 11-19 (24 with learning disabilities), and regular sessions are also open to 8-10 year olds - click here.

BSL

We have been running a range of family friendly BSL courses and workshops allowing children and families to try BSL, improve their skills, practice their conversation skills and study for a BSL Level 1 qualification. For more information - click here.

Previously our sessions have included:

BSL Level 1 for families
Beginners classes for adults, children and tots
Relatives (and the occasional professional) signing course
Children's Improvers Sign Course
Conversation sessions
